About Betty Neels

Betty Neels (Evelyn Jessy Neels Meijer, 1909-2001) was an English romance novelist and former nurse who wrote 134 novels for Mills & Boon, many featuring Dutch doctors. Wikipedia gives her birth as 15 September 1909, though Open Library gives 1910; she died on 7 June 2001, aged 91.

She trained at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, qualified as a State Registered Nurse in 1937 and was called up to the Territorial Army Nursing Service in 1939, becoming a Sister in 1941. In 1942 she married Johannes Meijer, a Dutchman she had met in Northern Ireland, and they spent thirteen years in the Netherlands, where she went back to nursing. She later retired as a night superintendent and only then began writing. Her first novel, Sister Peters in Amsterdam, appeared in 1969 and was issued in North America as Harlequin Romance number 1361 in January 1970. Over about thirty years she wrote 134 novels, 130 of them in the Harlequin Romance line, and her heroes were often Dutch doctors.
