About Greg Bear

Greg Bear (20 August 1951 to 19 November 2022) was an American science fiction writer, known for hard science fiction novels such as Blood Music, Eon and The Forge of God, and winner of two Hugo and five Nebula Awards.

Born Gregory Dale Bear in San Diego, he worked early on as an illustrator and was one of the founders of San Diego Comic-Con. His first novel, Hegira, appeared from Dell in New York in 1979. He made his name in the mid-1980s: Blood Music (Arbor House, 1985) grew out of his award-winning 1983 novelette, and Eon (Bluejay, 1985) and The Forge of God (Tor, 1987) followed. Later novels include Queen of Angels (1990), Anvil of Stars (1992), Moving Mars (Tor, 1993), Darwin's Radio (1999) and Darwin's Children (2003). He also wrote Foundation and Chaos (1998) and Star Wars: Rogue Planet (2000). His last novel was The Unfinished Land (2021).

His Hugos were for "Blood Music" and "Tangents", and his Nebulas for those two stories, the novella "Hardfought", and the novels Moving Mars and Darwin's Radio. He served as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America from 1988 to 1990. He married Astrid Anderson, daughter of Poul Anderson, in 1983, and died in Seattle aged 71.
