About Margaret Rome

Margaret Rome was a British romance novelist who wrote more than 30 novels for Mills & Boon from 1968 into the 1980s, many of them reissued in North America by Harlequin.

Little is recorded about her life: reference listings give her nationality as British and her contact address as care of Mills & Boon in Richmond, Surrey, and no birth or death dates are published in the sources we checked. Her first novels, The Lottery for Matthew Devlin and The Marriage of Caroline Lindsay, appeared from Mills & Boon in 1968, followed in 1969 by A Chance to Win and Flower of the Marsh. A Chance to Win became Harlequin Romance no. 1307 in June 1969.

She wrote steadily through the 1970s and early 1980s, in books such as Man of Fire and Bird of Paradise (1970), Chateau of Flowers (1971), Bride of the Rif (1972), Island of Pearls and The Bartered Bride (1973), Lion of Venice (1977), Isle of Calypso (1979), and Second-Best Bride, King of Kielder and Castle in Spain (1981). The Romance Wiki counts 26 of her books in the Harlequin Romance line and eight in Harlequin Presents, plus one Mills & Boon Masquerade historical, Maid of the Border (1979). The Writers Directory lists her final title as Pagan Gold and dates it 1989, although the Romance Wiki records its Harlequin Romance edition in April 1986.

For collectors. Her books exist in Mills & Boon editions, Harlequin reprints and large print versions (Ulverscroft issued Chateau of Flowers). The earliest titles, The Lottery for Matthew Devlin and The Marriage of Caroline Lindsay (1968), are her first books, and the 1979 Masquerade title is the odd one out in her output.
