About Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman (born 10 November 1960 in Portchester, Hampshire) is an English writer of fantasy novels, comics and children's books, known for The Sandman, Good Omens with Terry Pratchett, American Gods and The Graveyard Book.

He began in the early 1980s as a journalist, writing interviews and reviews, before moving into comics. The Sandman (DC Comics, 1989 to 1996) ran for 75 issues and in 1991 became the first comic to win a literary award, the World Fantasy Award for short fiction. Good Omens, co-written with Pratchett, was published by Gollancz on 10 May 1990. His novels include Neverwhere, adapted from his BBC television series, Stardust (1999), American Gods (2001), which won the Hugo and Nebula awards, and Anansi Boys (2005). For younger readers he wrote Coraline (2002) and The Graveyard Book (2008), the first book to win both the Newbery and Carnegie medals. The Ocean at the End of the Lane (2013) was named Book of the Year at the British National Book Awards, and Norse Mythology followed in 2017. Since 2024 several women have accused him of sexual assault and abuse, which he denies; the allegations have halted or affected adaptations of his work.

For collectors

The Gollancz first edition of Good Omens (1990) is the UK first; the American edition from Workman differs, adding a passage near the end and footnotes absent from the British text. The Graveyard Book appeared first in the US from HarperCollins on 30 September 2008, a month before Bloomsbury's UK edition, which came in two versions illustrated by Dave McKean and by Chris Riddell.
