The story first appeared in The New Yorker on 13 October 1997. Its first separate appearance as a book is this short Fourth Estate paperback original, London, 1998, of 58 pages (19 cm), ISBN 1 85702 940 2. It came before the story was collected in Close Range (1999) and long before the Scribner Story to Screenplay volume (2005). There was no hardback issue. One dealer dates the book 1997, but catalogue records give 1998.
