Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Buried Fire first edition?
Bodley Head, London, in 1999, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Jonathan Stroud's first novel is a true British first: The Bodley Head, London, 1999, a hardback in dust jacket of about 300 pages, ISBN 0 370 32730 6. The American edition from Hyperion/Miramax is secondary. Two dealers identify the first printing by a full number line on the copyright page that runs down to 1; a line lacking 1 means a later impression. Uncorrected proofs in soft covers, one dated May 1999, were circulated before publication and are a separate collectable, not the published first. Signed copies offered by dealers are signed on the title page.
