Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • Paperback firsts are usually modest unless they are paperback originals; later printings carry little premium.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Eona first appeared in April 2011, from Angus & Robertson in Australia (trade paperback) and Viking in New York (hardback, 19 April). In Britain it came out first under a different title, The Necklace of the Gods, as a Bantam Press (Transworld) trade paperback on 26 May 2011, ISBN 9780593061374, about 467 pages; a Bantam mass market paperback followed in February 2012. The young adult imprint David Fickling Books then issued it as Eona: Return of the Dragoneye on 4 August 2011, in hardback (ISBN 9780385616577, 448 pages) and trade paperback (ISBN 9780385616584); the Fickling hardback is the first UK hardback. Later UK issues are a smaller Fickling paperback (2012, ISBN 9781849920162) and a Corgi paperback (2014, ISBN 9780552572163).

Publisher's practice

How Bantam Books marked its first editions

  • Where a printing line appears on the copyright page, the lowest number shows the printing, whatever order the numbers run in; a line with a 1 normally indicates a first printing.
  • Book club editions are a common trap: their jackets usually carry no price on the front flap, so a priced jacket is one of the first things to check.
