Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Farmer Boy was first published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1933 with illustrations by Helen Sewell (one library record gives that issue a joint New York and London imprint, but it is the American edition); Garth Williams reillustrated it for Harper's uniform edition of 1953. The first British edition is the Lutterworth Press hardback, London 1965, with the Garth Williams pictures, catalogued as viii, 371 pages in octavo, following the pagination of the 1953 Harper edition. Lutterworth reprinted it (a 1970 reprint is recorded) and later issued a smaller format of 236 pages from Cambridge; the ISBN 0 7188 0298 5 is catalogued against the 1965 date but belongs to these later issues, since the 1965 book predates standard book numbers. A Penguin paperback followed in 1972. A Harper copy is American.
