Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The first printing is told from later ones by 2 points of issue listed below.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Hamish Hamilton hardback, London, August 2014, 372 numbered pages with red endpapers, in a photographic dust jacket printed with the price £16.99 on the front flap. Two versions were issued at the same time under the same ISBN: one opens with George's contemporary story (a CCTV camera icon), the other with Francesco's Renaissance story (an eye icon). Neither has priority, so collectors often want both. A first impression has a printing line ending in 001 on the copyright page; dealers record second, third and fifth impressions, which say so. Many copies were signed at festivals in 2014.

Publisher's practice

How Hamish Hamilton marked its first editions
