Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Krakatoa 2003 hardback?
Viking, London, in 2003, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The British first is the Viking (Penguin) hardback dated 6 May 2003 by Open Library, ISBN 0670911267 / 9780670911264, 432 pages. Look for that ISBN on the copyright page. A paperback with a Viking 0670 ISBN (9780670914289) is dated June 2003, and the Penguin paperback (9780141005171) followed in June 2004. The US first, HarperCollins, New York (ISBN 9780066212852), is dated 1 April 2003 by Open Library, so it seems to predate the Viking edition; Thorndike issued a US large print the same year.

Publisher's practice

How Viking marked its first editions

  • Viking first printings carry no printing statement beyond the publication line, while later printings are recorded on the copyright page with their number or date, so any reprint note means a later printing.
  • From the late 1930s onwards first printings typically read "First published in [year] by The Viking Press" (later "by Viking Penguin Inc.") or "Published in [year] by The Viking Press" on the copyright page; Viking's Stephen King firsts of 1979 to 1987 follow this pattern.
