Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Quick answer

Who published the Last Call 1993 hardback?
HarperCollins, London, in 1993, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The first edition is American: William Morrow, New York, 1992 (ISBN 0 688 10732 X, 479 pages), with a Charnel House edition the same year that includes an extra poem. The ISFDB publication list shows no British hardback; the first UK edition is the HarperCollins paperback of December 1993, published in London, ISBN 0 586 21452 6. Gollancz reissued it as a Fantasy Masterworks paperback in 2013 (ISBN 978 0 575 11681 8), a later edition. No print run or issue points are recorded in the sources checked.

Publisher's practice

How HarperCollins marked its first editions

  • Harper & Brothers marked first editions with the words "First Edition" on the copyright page, a custom the firm confirmed in 1947.
  • From 1912 Harper & Brothers also printed a two-letter code on the copyright page, one letter for the month and one for the year of printing (M stands for 1912).
  • Where a printing line appears on the copyright page, the lowest number shows the printing, whatever order the numbers run in; a line with a 1 normally indicates a first printing.
  • Book club editions are a common trap: their jackets usually carry no price on the front flap, so a priced jacket is one of the first things to check.
