Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Lest Darkness Fall 1955 hardback?
William Heinemann, London, in 1955, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The novel was first published in New York by Henry Holt in 1941, after a shorter version in Unknown in 1939, and was reprinted in America by Galaxy and Prime Press in 1949. The first British edition is the William Heinemann, London, hardback of 1955, issued in an illustrated dust jacket. Confirm Heinemann and 1955 on the title page; Holt, Prime Press, Galaxy, Pyramid, Ballantine and Science Fiction Book Club copies are American and not the UK first. Later reissues, such as the Gollancz SF Gateway e-book of 2011, are not firsts.

Publisher's practice

How William Heinemann marked its first editions

A Heinemann first printing normally carries a "First published (year)" line on the back of the title page and no later impression or edition listed under it. Heinemann recorded reprints and new editions in that same place.
