Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Lolly Willowes first edition?
Chatto & Windus, London, in 1926, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Sylvia Townsend Warner's first novel, Lolly Willowes, or The Loving Huntsman, was first published by Chatto and Windus in London in 1926, 246 pages. The American edition came from the Viking Press in New York the same year (251 pages); it states that it was published in January 1926 with a second printing in February 1926, so a Viking copy is neither the British first nor necessarily a first printing. Check for the Chatto and Windus imprint and the 1926 date on the title page. No binding colour, jacket price, print run or issue points were found in two sources.

Publisher's practice

How Chatto & Windus marked its first editions

  • Chatto & Windus did not use a special mark for first editions: it told H. S. Boutell so in its replies to his surveys of publishers' practice.
