Identification

How to identify this edition

The first British edition is titled Michael Strogoff, the Courier of the Czar and carries 1877 on the title page, though it was out in late 1876: the SF Encyclopedia dates it 1876 and a Verne collector's site records a bound-in publisher's catalogue dated October 1876. The translation, credited to W. H. G. Kingston, was by his wife Agnes Kinloch Kingston. Two sources agree that the first issue has two maps of Strogoff's route and a publisher's catalogue at the back, so check both are present; rebound copies often lose the catalogue. Not the British first: the American editions (Frank Leslie in wrappers, 1876 to 1877; Scribner, Armstrong, 1877, revised by Julius Chambers) and later dated Sampson Low reissues (1880 onwards).
