A Newbery Medal book first published in New York by Harcourt, Brace in 1956 with illustrations by Beth and Joe Krush. The earliest British edition found in UK library catalogues and Open Library is Brockhampton Press, Leicester, 1967, 180 pages, 22 cm, carrying the 1956 copyright and the Krush illustrations. An earlier British issue cannot be ruled out. Harcourt and later American reprints are not the UK first.
