Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

A picture book illustrated in colour throughout by Axel Scheffler. The first UK issue is the Macmillan Children's Books hardback of 2000, ISBN 0333720008 (9780333720004); the British Library copy is catalogued as about 28 cm with 26 unnumbered pages. A paperback under the same imprint, ISBN 0333720016, was listed alongside it. Later forms are easy to separate by ISBN: a large-format big book (2002), a Campbell Books board book (2003), a Macmillan Audio book and CD pack (2005) and a 2017 board book are all later issues. The same text and pictures appeared in the United States as Where's My Mom?, which is not a UK edition. Check the copyright page for any statement of a later impression.

Publisher's practice

How Macmillan Children's Books marked its first editions

Macmillan has long marked its later printings: a reprint or new edition carries a note of its printing history on the back of the title page, so a copy with no such note is the place to start.

On modern books, look for a number line on the copyright page. If the 1 is present, in any order, the copy is usually a first printing; a line such as 3 5 7 9 8 6 4 shows a later one.
