Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Quichotte first edition?
Jonathan Cape, in 2019, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Jonathan Cape hardback, published 29 August 2019 on the same day as the Penguin Books India edition and a few days ahead of Random House in the US (3 September 2019), so the Cape issue is a true first. The hardback ISBN 978-1-78733-191-4 identifies it; national library records give xii, 390 pages at 24 cm, while trade listings give the extent as 416 pages. The library record also carries a second ISBN, 978-1-78733-192-1, for another Cape format, so check the ISBN on the copyright page against the hardback number. UNVERIFIED: no first-issue jacket price was found in any source.

Publisher's practice

How Jonathan Cape marked its first editions

A Jonathan Cape first impression carries "First published" with the year on the back of the title page and nothing else, because Cape recorded every later impression in the same place.

  • Cape told H. S. Boutell that it printed "First published" and the year on the back of the title page and added a line such as "Second impression" with its year for each unrevised reprint. The Ahearns' publisher list for ILAB gives the same rule: "First published (Year)" on first editions, with later printings noted.
  • On the Bond novels, a first impression shows the "First Published" statement with no later printings listed beneath it.
