In short

Quick answer

Who published the Ramona 1884?
Macmillan and Co., London, in 1884.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The true first edition is American: Roberts Brothers, Boston, November 1884, after weekly serialisation in the Christian Union from May to November 1884. Macmillan published the novel in London in the same year as Ramona: A Story, which is the first UK edition. Look for the Macmillan imprint dated 1884. Later London printings exist (Open Library records a Macmillan new edition of 1887), and further editions followed around 1900, in 1911 and 1914; modern reprints such as the 1992 Fisher edition are not firsts. The Tauchnitz edition (Leipzig, 1885) is a Continental reprint, not a UK edition.

Publisher's practice

How Macmillan and Co. marked its first editions

  • Reprints are recorded on the back of the title page: a reprinted book carries a printing history there, such as "First edition 1900, Reprinted 1902", so a Macmillan book with no such history should be a first impression.
  • The firm told enquirers in 1947 and again in 1982 that its first editions carry the date of publication on the title page. On a reprint the title-page date is the date of that printing, so always check the reverse for a printing history.
