Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Sad Cypress first edition?
Collins, London, in 1940, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Collins Crime Club published the first edition in London in March 1940, 256 pages, ahead of Dodd, Mead's New York edition later that year. It is bound in orange cloth and was issued in a pictorial jacket. The published price was 8s. 3d., the first rise in the price of a new Christie in Britain. Copies in the trade often have faded or spotted cloth and jackets that are price clipped or reinforced with tape, so check for both.

Publisher's practice

How Collins marked its first editions

  • Collins did not adopt any special method of marking first editions or first impressions, according to its statements to H. S. Boutell.
  • Collins said that when it issued a cheaper edition, the reverse of the title page recorded the date of the original edition and that of the cheap edition.
