What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The first printing is told from later ones by 1 point of issue listed below.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

First published by Faber and Faber, London, in November 1968; it won the first Booker Prize in 1969. Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1969, is the American first. It predates thirteen-digit ISBNs (catalogued as 0 571 08557 1). Bound in orange boards with black spine lettering; the unclipped jacket carries the dual price 30s / £1.50. Some copies survive with the publisher's band announcing the 1969 Booker win; as the prize came after publication, the band is a later addition and its absence does not indicate a later printing, though copies with it are sought after. Dealers rate this among the scarcest Booker winners in first edition. Faber reissued the novel in 2008 (Faber Finds), 2011 and 2018, the last reusing the first edition jacket design with added text.

Publisher's practice

How Faber & Faber marked its first editions

A Faber first edition has a single "First published" line on the back of the title page with no reprint dates beneath it; on older books the year in that line is written in Roman numerals, as in "First published in mcml".

Allen and Patricia Ahearn's publisher list for ILAB gives the "First published" statement, says later printings are noted, and says the year was in Roman numerals before the switch to Arabic. Several unrelated dealers offering 1950 Faber firsts describe the same thing: "First published in mcml" on the verso and no other printings listed.
