Macmillan & Co., London, in 1917, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The first British edition is Macmillan and Co., London, 1917, an octavo of 282 pages, about 21 cm. D. Appleton and Company published the American edition in New York the same year, with 290 pages plus two blank leaves, about 20 cm. The page count is the quickest way to tell the London issue from the New York one: 282 against 290. Later reprints with ISBNs are not firsts.

Publisher's practice

How Macmillan and Co. marked its first editions

  • Reprints are recorded on the back of the title page: a reprinted book carries a printing history there, such as "First edition 1900, Reprinted 1902", so a Macmillan book with no such history should be a first impression.
  • The firm told enquirers in 1947 and again in 1982 that its first editions carry the date of publication on the title page. On a reprint the title-page date is the date of that printing, so always check the reverse for a printing history.
