Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Quick answer

Routledge, London, in 1934, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The first edition is American (Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1934). The first British edition is the Routledge issue of the same year, xi plus 495 pages with plates; the British Library record describes it as published in London by G. Routledge & Sons but printed in the USA, so it was probably made from American sheets. Look for the Routledge imprint dated 1934. Routledge kept it in print: library records show a 1946 issue and a sixth impression of 1947, and a London Library copy of 1934 is catalogued as a third printing, so check the title verso for impression statements.
