Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Constable, London, in 1921, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Heyer's first novel was first published by Constable, London, in September 1921 (15 September according to her biographer). It was her only book with Constable. Houghton Mifflin issued it in America the same year, from sheets printed in Great Britain: its title page reads Boston and New York, Houghton Mifflin, 1921, with the subtitle A Romance of the XVIII Century, so check the imprint before buying a copy described simply as a 1921 first. Heinemann took the book over in 1929, with a jacket by Walter Lambert; Heinemann copies are later reissues even though the Wikipedia infobox shows the 1929 jacket as the first edition. Heyer's biographer has never seen the original Constable jacket, so treat any jacketed 1921 Constable copy with suspicion.
