Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

The true first edition is Harper & Brothers, October 1912, whose title page carries a joint New York and London imprint; it is an American book and not a British edition. The first edition published in Britain traced in UK library catalogues is Constable's new uniform edition, London, 1927, 511 pages, issued the same year as Boni & Liveright's completely revised American edition. A later Constable printing of 1936 is recorded, so check the date on the title page and its reverse. For the Harper true first: the reverse of the title page reads 'Published October, 1912' with the Harper code letters K-M; later Harper printings drop that line and carry other letters (one scanned copy reads A-W), and A. L. Burt reprints carry Burt's imprint. Harper jackets are rare: a Christie's lot note says auction records show only four copies in jacket.
