Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

The first book of the Snopes trilogy was published by Random House in New York in 1940 (421 pages). Chatto & Windus issued the first English edition in London the same year. It has 333 pages and is bound in mustard or gold cloth with the spine lettered in green, in a dust jacket. A 1957 Chatto issue keeps the 333 pages but is bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering, so check the cloth and the title page date.

Publisher's practice

How Chatto & Windus marked its first editions

  • Chatto & Windus did not use a special mark for first editions: it told H. S. Boutell so in its replies to his surveys of publishers' practice.
