Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • Paperback firsts are usually modest unless they are paperback originals; later printings carry little premium.

In short

Quick answer

Who published The Plain Truth first edition?
Pocket Books, New York, in 2000, in paperback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Picoult's novel was published in 2000 by Pocket Books, and the British Library catalogued that edition with a joint New York and London imprint (ISBN 0671776126; Open Library gives 405 pages). That shared printing is the first edition issued in Britain. Hodder & Stoughton's own British hardback (ISBN 0340836563) did not follow until 2004, and the BNB record for it notes the earlier Pocket publication. Look for the Pocket Books name with the London place on the title page; a Hodder 2004 copy is a later British edition.

Publisher's practice

How Pocket Books marked its first editions

The single most useful fact: Pocket Books was founded as a paperback reprint line. For most Pocket titles, above all before the 1970s, the Pocket copy is a later paperback and the first edition is a hardback from another publisher. The exceptions are paperback originals and the hardcovers it issued from 1989.
