Quick answer

Pan Macmillan, London, in 2011.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The first UK edition is the Macmillan trade paperback published in London in May 2011, ISBN 978-0-230-75492-8, about 417 pages, in the larger (roughly 234 by 153 mm) trade format. We found no record of a Macmillan hardback. The Pan paperback, ISBN 978-0-330-51497-2, came later in 2011 (Wikipedia dates it 7 October 2011), and the British Library record for it says the book was originally published by Macmillan. The St. Martin's Griffin edition of 2012 is the first American edition and is also recorded as first published in Britain by Macmillan in 2011. Wikipedia treats the Pan release as the UK first; the catalogue records show it was not. A first should carry the Macmillan imprint and the 978-0-230 ISBN above; a Pan or St. Martin's ISBN means a later edition.

Publisher's practice

How Pan Macmillan marked its first editions

A Pan Macmillan first printing is read from the copyright page: a modern book states the year it was first published and carries a number line that still includes 1.

Read the full guide to Pan Macmillan first editions, decade by decade, and check your copy's copyright page against it. Our number line decoder reads the printing from the row of numbers.
