Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The first printing is told from later ones by 1 point of issue listed below.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

The English first is six octavo volumes issued separately by Cassell between 1948 (The Gathering Storm) and 1954 (Triumph and Tragedy), so each volume in a first edition set has its own date. Houghton Mifflin's American volumes appeared first, but collectors usually prefer the English set for its additional maps, plans and diagrams. Expect black cloth with gilt spine titles, red-stained top edges, and folding and full-page maps. First-issue jackets carry the price on the front flap. The English first is Cohen A240.4 and Woods A123b.
