The true first edition is the British trade paperback published in London by Scribner, the Simon & Schuster UK imprint, on 5 August 2002, ISBN 0-7432-2033-1. Its cover is a photographic collage credited to hen.uk.com (one bibliography names the designer as Henry Steadman). In November 2002 Gollancz proposed republishing the novel, and its hardback (ISBN 0-575-07002-1) followed in 2003; it is the first hardback but a later edition, often mistaken for the first. The first American edition is the Old Earth Books hardback of 2005.
