Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

The Simulacra first appeared in the United States as an Ace paperback original in 1964, with a cover by Ed Emshwiller. It was not published in Britain until 1977, when Eyre Methuen of London issued a hardback of 220 pages, ISBN 0 413 37750 4; the British National Bibliography records it as originally published by Ace in 1964, and the 2004 Gollancz reissue cites Ace 1964 and Eyre Methuen 1977 as the earlier editions. Check for the Eyre Methuen name and the 0 413 ISBN.

Publisher's practice

How Methuen marked its first editions

  • Methuen used a consistent system from 1905: a first edition carries "First Published in" with the year on the reverse of the title page, and each reprint adds a further line below it.

Read the full guide to Methuen first editions, decade by decade, and check your copy's copyright page against it. Our number line decoder reads the printing from the row of numbers.
