Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Simon & Schuster, London, in 1998, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The Winner was first published in New York by Warner Books in December 1997. A British Library note on the Chivers large print edition states that the standard British edition came from Simon & Schuster in London in 1998, and the BNB records it under ISBN 0684819724. A second Simon & Schuster 1998 ISBN, 0684819732, is listed by Open Library as a 513 page paperback, a different format from the first. Book Club Associates also issued a London edition dated 1998 without an ISBN; it is a book club copy. Look for the Simon & Schuster London imprint and the 0684819724 ISBN.

Publisher's practice

How Simon & Schuster marked its first editions

  • Up to the early 1950s Simon & Schuster put no first-edition statement in its books: a first printing has a clean copyright page, while later printings are noted there.
  • Where a printing line appears on the copyright page, the lowest number shows the printing, whatever order the numbers run in; a line with a 1 normally indicates a first printing.
  • Book club editions are a common trap: their jackets usually carry no price on the front flap, so a priced jacket is one of the first things to check.
