Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Third Girl first edition?
Collins, London, in 1966, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Collins published the novel for its Crime Club in November 1966, before Dodd, Mead's New York edition of 1967, so the Collins hardback is the true first. It has 256 pages and was published at 18s. The binding is red, lettered in gilt; one dealer calls it paper-covered boards rather than cloth. The first edition jacket was designed by Kenneth Farnhill. Later Collins impressions and book club issues say so on the reverse of the title page, so a first carries no reprint or book club line.

Publisher's practice

How Collins marked its first editions

  • Collins did not adopt any special method of marking first editions or first impressions, according to its statements to H. S. Boutell.
  • Collins said that when it issued a cheaper edition, the reverse of the title page recorded the date of the original edition and that of the cheap edition.
