Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The first printing is told from later ones by 1 point of issue listed below.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Doubleday published the true first in New York in 1969. The first British edition is Rapp & Whiting, London, June 1970, 202 pages, number 0 85391 164 9. It is bound in black with silver lettering on the spine; sources differ on whether the covering is cloth or paper boards. The jacket should carry the 28s price on the front flap (one dealer records it as decimal and shilling prices together on the lower front flap), so check that it has not been clipped. The number printed in the book is reported to be truncated, so do not reject a copy for that.

Publisher's practice

How Rapp & Whiting marked its first editions

  • The firm's Philip K. Dick titles are first British editions, not first editions of the text: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Rapp & Whiting, 1969) is sold as the first British edition, and Ubik (Rapp & Whiting, 1970) followed Doubleday's American first edition of 1969.
