Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

The book first appeared in the United States from Oxford University Press in January 2002, subtitled 'Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response'. The British edition from Weidenfeld & Nicolson followed on 25 April 2002 under a different subtitle, 'The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East', as a hardback of 192 pages, ISBN 0-297-82929-7. The subtitle separates a UK copy from the American first. The Phoenix paperback of November 2002 and the Harper Perennial paperback are later editions, not firsts.
