About Amulet Books
Amulet Books is the middle-grade and teen imprint of the New York publisher Abrams, launched in spring 2004 and best known as the home of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Origins. Abrams announced the imprint in September 2003 as an offshoot of Abrams Books for Young Readers. It was led by senior editor Susan Van Metre, who had joined Abrams in 2002 after twelve years at Dutton. The debut list in 2004 paired four novels, including William Sleator's The Boy Who Couldn't Die, with four nonfiction titles in a teen self-help series called Sunscreen. Van Metre went on to become vice-president and publisher of both Abrams Books for Young Readers and Amulet in April 2010.
Notable books. Besides Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Amulet list includes Tom Angleberger's Origami Yoda books, Michael Buckley's Sisters Grimm and NERDS series and Cece Bell's graphic memoir El Deafo. Lauren Myracle's Internet Girls novels, which began with ttyl, appear under the sister imprint Amulet Paperbacks. In 2010 Van Metre called the list's novels highly visual and credited the house's long design and production tradition, although the imprint was first pitched in 2003 as text-led rather than illustrated.
Ownership. Amulet has always been part of Abrams (founded by Harry N. Abrams in 1949). Abrams was owned by La Martinière Groupe from 1997, and since 2018, when La Martinière was bought by the French group Média-Participations, it has been a subsidiary of that company.
