About Atlantic Monthly Press

Atlantic Monthly Press is an American literary imprint founded in Boston in 1917 as the book publishing arm of The Atlantic Monthly magazine, and since 1993 part of the independent New York publisher Grove Atlantic.

From the autumn of 1925 its books were published under the Little, Brown and Company imprint, an arrangement Grove Atlantic's own timeline dates formally to 1934, and Little, Brown's first-edition practice applied to them. Early successes included Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall's Mutiny on the Bounty (1932).

In 1986 the press was separated from the magazine and became a fully independent publishing house, while Little, Brown kept the older Atlantic backlist. In 1993 Morgan Entrekin, with Joan Bingham, bought Grove Weidenfeld and merged it with Atlantic Monthly Press to form Grove Atlantic, which describes itself as an independent literary publisher since 1917.

The modern press published Charles Frazier's first novel Cold Mountain (1997), winner of the National Book Award for Fiction, and Grove Atlantic's lists of the period also took in Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City (1996), Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down (1999) and Leif Enger's Peace Like a River (2001). Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss, which Atlantic published in the US, won the Man Booker Prize in 2006. Atlantic Monthly Press remains a Grove Atlantic imprint alongside Grove Press and Black Cat, with Entrekin as president and publisher.

Identification

How to identify Atlantic Monthly Press first editions

What to look for
  • Before autumn 1925 the press used no first-edition statement and did not record reprints consistently, so early firsts are hard to confirm.
  • From autumn 1925 its books appeared under the Little, Brown imprint and followed that firm's practice. In the 1930s and 1940s a first printing carries a single line on the copyright page giving the month and year of publication; each later printing adds another dated line, so a copy with only one such line is a first printing.
  • The 1997 first printing of Cold Mountain has a full number row running to 1 on the copyright page and the misprint "man-woman" for "mad-woman" on page 25.
  • The first-printing jacket of Cold Mountain has a John Berendt blurb sticker on the front and four reviews on the back panel.
