About Broadway Books
Broadway Books is a New York publishing imprint founded in 1995 within Bantam Doubleday Dell and now part of Penguin Random House's Crown group, known for travel and narrative non-fiction such as Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods.
Broadway was set up as a new unit of Bantam Doubleday Dell, then owned by the German media group Bertelsmann, and issued its first list in autumn 1996. Bertelsmann bought Random House in 1998, Broadway was combined with Doubleday in 1999, and in a 2008 reorganisation Broadway moved to Random House's Crown Publishing Group.
Its best-known early success was Bryson's account of walking the Appalachian Trail, A Walk in the Woods, published by Broadway in New York in 1998. Broadway also issued the trade paperback of Frances Mayes's Tuscan memoir Under the Tuscan Sun, which by October 1998 had 740,000 copies in print after 26 printings. Collectors should note that the book first appeared in hardback in September 1996, before the Broadway paperback.
In 2010 Broadway's general publishing was folded into Crown, and Broadway became Crown's paperback publisher. Crown is now a subsidiary of Penguin Random House, the company formed when Penguin and Random House merged in 2013.
