About Brooks/Cole Pub. Co
Brooks/Cole Publishing Company was an American college textbook publisher based in Monterey, California. International Thomson bought it in 1978, and its list now sits within Cengage Group.
In the late 1970s the firm was commissioning and editing university texts in subjects such as chemistry and computer science, so it served the higher education market rather than general readers. International Thomson added Wadsworth Publishing in 1979, and books from around 1990 often carry a shared imprint such as "Wadsworth & Brooks/Cole". One example is Richard Durrett's Probability: Theory and Examples, which booksellers list under both the Brooks/Cole and the joint names.
In 2000 International Thomson Publishing was restructured as Thomson Learning. In 2007 Thomson sold that business for US$7.75 billion to a private equity group made up of Apax Partners and OMERS Capital Partners. In July 2007 it was renamed Cengage Learning, and in 2021 it was rebranded Cengage Group. The company moved its headquarters from Stamford, Connecticut, to Boston in 2014. As a result, Brooks/Cole titles also turn up in later printings under the Thomson and Cengage names.
