About Butterworth-Heinemann
Butterworth-Heinemann is a British publisher of professional, technical and higher-education books, formed in 1990 and now an imprint of Elsevier, part of RELX.
It was created by merging two Reed International subsidiaries, Heinemann Professional Publishing and Butterworths Scientific. The Butterworths side traces back to 1818, when Henry Butterworth opened a law bookshop at 7 Fleet Street in London after falling out with his uncle, a fellow law bookseller; the firm passed to the International Publishing Corporation in 1965 and to Reed when it acquired IPC in 1970. The Heinemann side came from William Heinemann, which Octopus bought in 1985 before Octopus itself was sold to Reed in 1987.
The imprint is based in Oxford, with a publishing unit in Waltham, Massachusetts. Its list is aimed at students and practitioners, and its titles range across engineering mathematics, optometry and ophthalmic dispensing, physiotherapy, surgical anatomy and marketing.
