About Churchill Livingstone
Churchill Livingstone is a British medical and nursing publisher formed in 1971 by combining Longman's medical list with two older houses, J. & A. Churchill of London and E. & S. Livingstone of Edinburgh; it is now an imprint of Elsevier's health sciences division.
The Churchill line descends from John Churchill (1801 to 1875), who took over an established London medical bookselling business after his marriage in 1832 and built a publishing list that included Robert Liston's Practical Surgery (1837) and the anonymous Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation (1844). He was also publisher of The Lancet from 1842 to 1847. When he retired in 1870 the business passed to his sons, John and Augustus.
Pearson owned the merged company at first. Standard textbooks issued under the name include Sir William Osler's The Principles and Practice of Medicine, Myles' Textbook for Midwives and Gray's Anatomy, for which Churchill Livingstone is listed as publisher from the 36th edition of 1980.
Harcourt bought the imprint in 1997. When Elsevier acquired Harcourt in 2001, Churchill Livingstone became one of its health science imprints, and the 39th edition of Gray's Anatomy (2005) appeared under the Elsevier name.
