About Disney Press
Disney Press is a children's book imprint of The Walt Disney Company, set up at the start of the 1990s and based in New York, that publishes novels and story books built on Disney films and characters, including Serena Valentino's Villains series.
Disney's publishing history dates the imprint to 1990, when it launched alongside Hyperion Books for Children; Wikidata gives 1991 and an address at 114 Fifth Avenue, New York. The Disney Publishing Group was incorporated in January 1992, and in March 1995 Hyperion Books for Children was merged with the Disney Press units because the market had too many Disney books. Disney Press now sits within Disney Book Group, part of Disney Publishing Worldwide, whose head office is in Glendale, California.
Its best-known original fiction is the Villains series by Serena Valentino, which retells Disney stories from the antagonist's side. It began with The Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen (2009), and continued with books on the Beast, Ursula, Maleficent, Cruella De Vil and Captain Hook. The imprint also issued The Zodiac Legacy illustrated novels with POW! Entertainment. In 2019 Lynn Waggoner was promoted to oversee Disney Press alongside other Disney imprints. Related series such as A Twisted Tale and Rick Riordan Presents come from the sister imprint Disney-Hyperion.
