About Doherty Associates, Tom

Tom Doherty Associates is the New York publisher behind Tor Books, founded in 1979 by the paperback executive Tom Doherty and renamed Tor Publishing Group in August 2022; it is part of Macmillan.

Doherty, born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1935, worked in sales at Pocket Books and later ran the Tempo and Ace lists at Grosset & Dunlap. He left in 1979 to set up Tom Doherty Associates, and its Tor imprint shipped its first titles in late 1980, with a full list from April 1981. Harriet McDougal and Jim Baen were among the founding team.

Doherty sold the company to St. Martin's Press in 1987, accepting a smaller offer than Simon & Schuster's because it left the firm its autonomy. Through St. Martin's it became part of the Holtzbrinck group, now Macmillan in the US. Its imprints include Forge, Tor Teen, Starscape, Tordotcom (novellas), Nightfire (horror) and Bramble (romance).

Tor won the Locus Award for best publisher every year from 1988 to 2024. Its authors include Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, Cory Doctorow (whose Little Brother was a Tor Teen book), Orson Scott Card, Gene Wolfe, V. E. Schwab and Martha Wells. Doherty stepped down as president in 2018.
