About George H. Doran Company

The George H. Doran Company was a New York publisher active from 1908 to 1927, founded by the Toronto-born George Henry Doran (born 1869) and best known as the American publisher of many British authors.

Doran first organised the business in Toronto and moved it to New York City in February 1908. He divided his time between New York and London and knew most of his writers well. The list covered many genres and included P. G. Wodehouse, Arnold Bennett, H. G. Wells, W. Somerset Maugham, Virginia Woolf, Arthur Conan Doyle and Sinclair Lewis, along with American names such as Joyce Kilmer, H. L. Mencken and John Dos Passos. During the First World War the firm published a good deal of pro-Allied material, including books by David Lloyd George.

Some Doran books precede their British editions. Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel The Valley of Fear appeared in book form from Doran in New York on 27 February 1915, illustrated by Arthur I. Keller, more than three months before the Smith, Elder edition in London on 3 June 1915. Doran also published an edition of John Buchan's Greenmantle in 1915 and issued Edwin Lefèvre's Reminiscences of a Stock Operator in 1923.

In 1927 the company merged with Doubleday, Page & Company to form Doubleday, Doran. The Doran name was dropped in 1946, when the firm became Doubleday & Company.
