About Greenwillow Books
Greenwillow Books is an American children's book imprint founded in 1974 by the editor Susan Hirschman at William Morrow, and part of HarperCollins since 1999.
Hirschman left Macmillan in protest after mass redundancies cut her staff and list, and Morrow offered her an imprint of her own. She brought managing editor Ada Shearon and art director Ava Weiss, with senior editor Elizabeth Schub joining soon after. The name joins the "Will" of William Morrow with Elizabeth Coatsworth's book Under the Green Willow.
Greenwillow's authors and illustrators have included Kevin Henkes, Arnold and Anita Lobel, Sid Fleischman, Donald Crews, Ann Jonas, Robin McKinley, Jack Prelutsky and Peggy Parish, whose Amelia Bedelia books it published. It also published Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle. Henkes won the Caldecott Medal for Kitten's First Full Moon, and Lynne Rae Perkins won the Newbery Medal for Criss Cross.
HarperCollins took over the imprint in 1999 when it bought William Morrow. Hirschman retired in 2001 and was succeeded by Virginia Duncan, who was still leading Greenwillow as vice president and publisher in 2025.
