About Harlequin Enterprises
Harlequin Enterprises is a Canadian publisher of series romance and women's fiction, founded in Winnipeg in 1949, owner of Mills & Boon since 1971 and a division of HarperCollins since 2014.
Origins. Richard Bonnycastle, Jack Palmer and Doug Weld founded Harlequin in 1949 to reprint books in paperback. Its first title, in May 1949, was Nancy Bruff's The Manatee, and its early list included reprints of Agatha Christie and Somerset Maugham.
Mills & Boon. In the late 1950s Harlequin began reprinting and distributing novels from the London romance publisher Mills & Boon in North America (sources give 1957 or 1958), and by 1964 Mills & Boon titles were all it published under the Harlequin name. In 1971 the Boon family sold Mills & Boon to Harlequin, which is still its parent.
Owners. Harlequin moved its base to Toronto in 1969. Torstar, owner of the Toronto Star, bought a majority stake in 1975 and the remaining shares in 1981. News Corp bought Harlequin from Torstar in 2014 and made it part of HarperCollins.
Today. Alongside its category romance lines, Harlequin runs imprints such as MIRA, Love Inspired, Park Row and Hanover Square. By 2024 it had published more than 40,000 romance titles and sold in over 100 international markets.
