About Hill and Wang

Hill and Wang is a New York publisher founded in 1956 by Arthur W. Wang and Lawrence Hill, now a division of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and best known for publishing Elie Wiesel's Night in English in New York in 1960.

Origins. Wang and Hill had both worked at the publisher A. A. Wyn before setting up on their own. They bought backlist titles from Wyn, and their first venture was Dramabooks, a series of plays in the then-new trade paperback format.

Night. Arthur Wang took on Wiesel's memoir in 1959 after other English-language publishers had turned it down, paying a token advance of $100. Stella Rodway's translation appeared in 1960 in a first printing of 3,000 copies, which took three years to sell out: only 1,046 copies, priced at $3, sold in the first eighteen months.

Later history. The founders sold the firm to Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1971, and it has remained an FSG division, part of Macmillan and the German Holtzbrinck group. Its list now concentrates on American history, world history and politics, and includes Elizabeth A. Fenn's Encounters at the Heart of the World (2014), which won the Pulitzer Prize for History.
