About Llewellyn Publications
Llewellyn Publications, now trading as Llewellyn Worldwide, is an American publisher of astrology, tarot, Wicca, magick and other body, mind and spirit books, founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1901 by the astrologer Llewellyn George.
Its early list was astrological: George's Astrological Lectures appeared in 1910 and the Daily Planetary Guide ran in several editions before 1920, the year the firm moved to Los Angeles. George died in 1954 (Sydney Omarr then edited the Moon Sign Book), and in 1958 a printing company took the business over. Carl L. Weschcke of St Paul, Minnesota, bought it around 1960 to 1961, moved it to the Midwest and renamed it Llewellyn Publications.
During the 1980s it published two books that became core reading for American Wiccans and their covens: Raymond Buckland's Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft and Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. Weschcke's company bought Fate magazine in 1988 and sold it to Galde Press around 2002. In the mid-2000s it started the Midnight Ink mystery list, which closed in 2018, and the Flux young adult list, sold to North Star Editions in 2016.
The company is based in Woodbury, Minnesota, and calls itself independent.
