About Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Books

Lothrop, Lee & Shepard was a Boston publisher formed in 1905 by the merger of the Lothrop company and Lee & Shepard, later a children's imprint of William Morrow, whose children's division closed after HarperCollins bought Morrow in 1999.

Lee & Shepard. William Lee and Charles A. B. Shepard founded Lee & Shepard in Boston in 1862. Its authors included the boys' writer Oliver Optic (William Taylor Adams), Sophie May (Rebecca Sophia Clarke) and John Townsend Trowbridge.

D. Lothrop & Co. Daniel Lothrop bought a bookshop in Dover, New Hampshire, in 1850, moved his publishing business to Boston in 1868 and launched Wide Awake, a magazine for young readers, in 1875. After his death in March 1892 his widow, Harriet, kept the firm going until it merged with Lee & Shepard in 1905.

The Morrow years. William Morrow and Company later acquired the firm and ran it as a children's list. Notable books include Alvin Tresselt and Roger Duvoisin's White Snow, Bright Snow (1947), which won the 1948 Caldecott Medal, and Louis Sachar's Wayside School Is Falling Down (1989). After HarperCollins acquired Morrow in 1999 the Lothrop children's division was shut, and the name now survives as a HarperCollins imprint.
