About McClelland & Stewart
McClelland & Stewart is a Toronto publisher founded in 1906 that became the leading publisher of Canadian literature, and is now an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada.
John McClelland and Frederick Goodchild started the firm as McClelland and Goodchild in 1906. George Stewart joined in December 1913, and when Goodchild left in 1918 the company became McClelland and Stewart. Its early business was largely distributing and printing books for foreign publishers, though in 1910 it issued L. M. Montgomery's Kilmeny of the Orchard, its first book by a Canadian author.
After Jack McClelland, the founder's son, joined in 1946, the firm turned to Canadian writing, and by 1962 most of its list was Canadian. Its authors have included Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Leonard Cohen, Michael Ondaatje, Mordecai Richler, Alice Munro and Robertson Davies, and it first published Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance in 1995.
Avie Bennett bought the company in 1986. In 2000 Random House of Canada took a 25% stake and Bennett gave the other 75% to the University of Toronto. Random House bought that share in 2011, and after Random House of Canada and Penguin Canada combined in 2013, McClelland & Stewart became part of Penguin Random House Canada. Its list includes the New Canadian Library series.
