About McGraw-Hill/Irwin

McGraw-Hill/Irwin was the business and economics textbook imprint of McGraw-Hill, built on Richard D. Irwin, Inc., which McGraw-Hill acquired in 1996 as part of Times Mirror's higher education group.

Richard D. Irwin, Inc. published college texts in business and economics, such as Basic Marketing: A Managerial Approach and Management Control Systems. For a time it belonged to Dow Jones & Company, and trade titles carried the Dow Jones-Irwin name in the late 1970s and 1980s, then Business One Irwin in the early 1990s. Times Mirror bought Irwin from Dow Jones in 1988 as its way into textbook publishing. In 1996 Times Mirror sold its textbook operations to McGraw-Hill; that purchase, Times Mirror Higher Education, included Richard D. Irwin and Irwin Professional.

Books from the late 1990s often name the publisher as Irwin/McGraw-Hill, while from the early 2000s the form McGraw-Hill/Irwin is usual. The parent company dates from 1888, when James H. McGraw and John A. Hill began the publishing ventures that merged their book departments in 1909 as the McGraw-Hill Book Company. McGraw-Hill's education business was sold to Apollo Global Management in 2013 and to Platinum Equity in 2021, and McGraw Hill listed on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2025.
